Privacy policy
Sage is an AI study helper for secondary school students in Ireland. Students, or their parents or guardians, sign up and pay themselves: Sage isn't provided through schools, and no school can see your account. Many students are under 18, so their safety and privacy come first. This page explains, in plain words, what Sage keeps, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. Last updated 27 October 2026.
The short version
- We keep only what Sage needs to work: your email, first name, age group, and your schoolwork on Sage.
- Under 16s need a parent or guardian's permission first. For under 18s, a parent or guardian buys the plan.
- Sage removes names and email addresses it can find before anything is sent to the AI.
- No adverts, no selling your information, no tracking cookies.
- You can see, correct or delete your information at any time.
Who is in charge of your information
Study Sage (studysage.online) is in charge of your information. In data protection law that makes us the “controller”. You can reach us about anything on this page at privacy@studysage.online.
What we keep, and why
- Your account: your email address, first name, school year, and age group (under 16, 16 to 17, or 18 and over). We don't ask for your date of birth. Your password is stored only in scrambled form, so nobody at Sage can read it.
- Confirming your email: when you sign up we email you a link, so we know the address is really yours. We record when you confirmed it.
- Free trial: to give each person one free trial, we keep a scrambled code made from your email address (not the address itself) for 24 months, even if you delete your account. We also keep a record of what each AI reply cost Sage (amounts and dates only, never what you wrote).
- Permission: for under 16s, a record of the parent or guardian's permission and when it was given or withdrawn.
- Your schoolwork: the questions you ask, your answers to practice questions, your progress, and any homework photos you choose to send. This is how Sage remembers where you're up to.
- Safety: if a message suggests someone may be at risk, that message is kept so a trained person at Sage can check it (see below).
- Staying on task: if someone tries to get Sage away from schoolwork (for example by asking it to ignore its rules), Sage refuses and keeps a short note of what was typed, with names removed.
We don't collect addresses, phone numbers or photos of faces. Please don't type private details into Sage.
Keeping you safe
- Sage tells you clearly that it is an AI, not a person, and that it can make mistakes.
- Sage only helps with schoolwork. It checks messages for harmful topics and steers the chat back kindly. Like any filter, it can miss things.
- If you write something that suggests you may be at risk, Sage pauses the lesson, encourages you to talk to a trusted adult and shows helpline details. That message may be read by a trained person at Sage, and nobody else. Sage isn't connected to your school, so no school or teacher is told.
- Sage is designed not to write your work for you, including Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs). The State Examinations Commission (SEC) requires any use of AI in coursework to be acknowledged.
How the AI is used
- Before your message goes to the AI, Sage removes names, email addresses and phone numbers it can find. The AI knows you only by a random code. No automatic filter catches everything, so please don't type private details.
- Hidden details in homework photos (such as where the photo was taken) are removed. The photo itself is sent to the AI so it can read it, so please don't send photos showing names or faces.
- The AI is provided by Anthropic. Our contract is with Anthropic Ireland Limited (Dublin). Anthropic processes AI requests outside the European Union, mainly in the United States, under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
- Anthropic deletes AI requests within 30 days and doesn't use them to train its models. If its own safety systems flag a request, it may keep it for up to 2 years.
- We never use your work to train AI models.
Removing names is not the same as making something anonymous: the text can still be about a real person, so we protect it in the same way.
Payments
The plan is paid by the student if they're 18 or over, or otherwise by a parent or guardian. Stripe handles card payments, under its own privacy policy. We keep only the payer's email and Stripe's customer reference, never card details. No schoolwork or chat is sent to Stripe.
Where your information is stored
Sage's database and homework photos are stored in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany). AI requests go to Anthropic, as described above.
Cookies and visit counts
- Sage uses one essential cookie to keep you signed in. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
- To see how busy the website is, Sage counts page visits without cookies. It doesn't store IP addresses: it keeps a scrambled daily code that can't identify anyone and is deleted after 30 days.
- Sage also keeps daily totals of which website sent visitors (just its name, such as “Google”), the type of device and browser, and a rough region from the browser's time zone. These are totals only and can't be linked to anyone.
How long we keep it
- We keep your information while your account is open. When an account is deleted, its chats and homework photos are deleted too.
- When a plan ends, nothing is deleted straight away. 90 days later we ask the account holder whether to delete it. You can ask us to delete it sooner at any time.
- If Sage ever closes, we will tell you at least 30 days before, and your information is never sold or handed to anyone else.
Your rights
Students, parents and guardians can ask to see, correct or delete a student's information, and can withdraw permission at any time. Email privacy@studysage.online. Withdrawing permission stops the student's access straight away.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.
What Sage can't promise
Sage is an AI and it can get things wrong. Its safety checks lower risks but can't remove them completely. It isn't a counselling service: anyone who is worried should talk to a trusted adult or contact the helplines shown on every page.
EU AI Act
Sage doesn't grade you or make decisions about your education, and it never tries to read your emotions.
